The mercury is rising, and this week’s events invite you to enjoy the balmy evening air. TC favorite Tokyo Night Market returns for its spring edition, and Greenroom Festival, Tenoz Canal Fes, and early fireworks events all happen waterside. Prefer to stay indoors? International Museum Day offers free culture and air conditioning, and Tokyo Game Market is where you’ll find plenty of ways to avoid the summer heat.
May 23rd - 25th
The streets of Shinjuku get a whole lot busier during the annual grand festival of Hanazono Shrine. The main event takes place on Sunday, when large portable shrines depart in the morning and are carried through the main streets of Shinjuku before returning in the evening.
May 21st
If you want to avoid the crowded mid-summer fireworks calendar, then go to this early summer fireworks festival that takes place over the ocean adjacent to Zushi Beach. During the 45-minute display, 7,000 fireworks will be dispatched into the night sky.
May 23rd
Experience fireworks like never before at the Star Island Odaiba Fireworks Festival. This futuristic fireworks display promises to amaze with 3D sound, drones, lasers, and fireworks. During the day, there will also be stalls selling a variety of food and drinks.

May 18th
International Museum Day “encourages public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society”. To celebrate, many museums in Tokyo will have free admission. This is no secret, though, so be prepared for large crowds.
May 20th - 24th
Wander under the boughs of Yoyogi Park and experience some of Tokyo’s charm and culture at the Tokyo Night Market. This multi-day event has live performances, street food, and stalls offering local crafts.

This year’s Greenroom Festival will welcome international artists such as Jon Batiste, Ezra Collective, Emma-Jean Thackray, and Joe Armon-Jones, to name a few. The event will also feature an eclectic mix of visual and performing arts, along with food and market stalls.

This three-day waterfront festival brings together craft stalls and local food along the Tennozu Canal. Browse handmade goods from independent makers, then grab something from the food trucks.

Tokyo has an event for just about every hobby. Game Market is proof. This biannual event is all about tabletop gaming, bringing together indie creators, veteran designers, and thousands of players for a weekend of analog action.

Struggle with networking, but enjoy a little crafting? This Shinjuku event aims to be the sweet spot: a casual, creatively oriented event with drop-in workshops, market stalls, performances, an exhibition, and music from live DJs.

Meat meets music at this unique fusion festival in eastern Tokyo. Nikuon, from the Japanese niku meaning meat, is an event showcasing some of Tokyo’s most innovative musicians and meals.

Takao Beer Mount is definitely the highest beer garden in Tokyo — situated on the side of Mt. Takao in western Tokyo, it offers a chance to drink and eat with a unique view across the city.

Past editions of this event have seen an estimated 180,000 people turn out to experience Laotian culture. Performances include dance troupes, traditional musicians, Lao and Japanese singers, and workshops in language, dance, and cooking.
